Dr. Chen Mao Davies

Chen holds a PhD in Computer Graphics and has over 15 years R&D experience in academia and industry. She spent 10 years creating Oscar & BAFTA award-winning visual effects for blockbuster films including Gravity and Blade Runner 2049 and a number of Disney, Marvel Studio, and Warner Brothers movies.

Her life course changed completely after she became a mother and experienced tremendous breastfeeding challenges. Struggling to achieve a good latch, She suffered from breast infections, baby's weight loss, and postpartum depression. Her experience motivated her to found LatchAid in 2018 to revolutionise breastfeeding and motherhood support using innovative and empathy.

LatchAid is an pioneering app utilising cutting-edge 3D technology and Artificial Intelligence to support mothers through their breastfeeding and early parenthood journeys. It has active users from 84 countries and reached top Top 30 in the medical category of the Apple App Store amongst 150,000 health apps with only 5 star reviews. LatchAid app is trialled with 12 NHS providers and The HCRG Care Group in 4 large UK regions, where expectant mothers and new mothers are prescribed LatchAid by healthcare providers.

Chen is a winner of the prestigious Innovate UK Women in Innovation Award recognised as a top female innovators in the UK. She has been recognised with a purple plaque by Innovate UK honouring her innovation in 24/7 digital breastfeeding and motherhood support. Her start-up journey and LatchAid have been featured in over 40 press articles and interviews including the BBC News.

LatchAid has won over £265,000 competitive funding including a record 3 Innovate UK grants for product R&D. It has recently completed its seed funding round of £1m, combining equity investment, convertible loan notes, and Innovate UK innovation loan. It received backing from a number of prominent angel investors including Dan Cobley (lead investor, former MD of Google UK & Ireland, managing partner of Blenheim Chalcot, co-founder of ClearScore, Salary Finance, and Koodoo) and Eileen Burbidge (MBE, Founder & Partner at Passion Capital and FinTech Envoy for HM Treasury).
